Key sector bodies in social care have demonstrated their commitment to promoting excellence and raising the profile of social care by supporting the Great British Care Awards in 2010.

The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS), the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and Skills for Care have all pledged to support the Great British Care Awards for this, its second year.

The Great British Care Awards, supported by the Department of Health, are a series of regional awards which celebrates excellence in social care and pay tribute to those who work in the sector.  The awards are all inclusive, bringing together the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors, as well as unpaid carers; promoting joint working.

In Autumn 2009 the inaugural Great British Care Awards were held in 5 regions throughout the North and the Midlands and were a resounding success.  Winners of the regional awards have been invited to attend the 2010 finals which take place in London at the prestigious Guildhall.  There are two finals, one for the home care sector which takes place on 15th May in association with Ceretas, the membership organisation representing home care.  The second final is for those working in the care home sector and takes place on 5th June in association with the English Community Care Association, the association representing community care in England.

The regional awards will take place once again throughout October and November, and will this year include the East and the South of England.  All the finalists will be invited to attend a spectacular gala dinner at venues throughout the UK, where the winners will be announced.  The winners from the regional awards will then be invited to attend the National Events for either Home Care or Care Homes sectors in Spring of 2011.

There are a total of around eighteen awards categories available for nomination, which represent all areas of the care sector, whether it be older people or specialist services, residential or home care.  From frontline staff such as care workers and care managers to people who have made an impact in other ways such as training, IT and innovation.

The awards support a chosen charity, The Maggie’s Centre, which has sites across the country supporting people who lives have been impacted upon by cancer.

People can nominate themselves, a colleague or a company and must accompany their nomination with an account of around 300 words saying why they are worthy winners of an award.  For an entry form call 0115 959 6133m e-mail info@care-awards.co.uk or visit www.care-awards.co.uk

“ADASS is delighted to give its strong backing to the Great British Care Awards 2010. They offer a wonderful opportunity to highlight the vital commitment and achievements of those in social care who give so much, day in and day out, across the country both in local authorities and the independent sector. We look forward to celebrating and recognising their work.”

Nadra Ahmed, Vice-Chair Skills for Care commented,

“Skills for Care is pleased to support the Great British Care Awards. Where the Skills for Care Accolades promote excellence and best practice in workforce development and celebrate the success of organisations and employers, the Great British Care Awards pay tribute to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work, all helping to raise the profile of the care sector as a whole.”

Julie Jones, SCIE’s Chief Executive, commented,

“I always look forward to these awards as it’s a great night out, celebrating the best that the sector has to offer. SCIE are delighted to support these awards. It rewards the work of the many talented and dedicated people who are in social care. SCIE is here to help you throughout what we are sure will be a very exciting, rewarding and challenging career.”

Lisa Carr, Director of The Great British Care Awards, said,

“We are delighted that we have had such overwhelming support from the sector for the Great British Care Awards. The awards offer a unique opportunity to celebrate the successes of individuals, teams and businesses throughout the UK - people who really do make a positive impact on people’s lives. These really are the ‘people’s awards’ and we take the awards to the people in their regions, paying tribute to the unsung heroes of our communities.  Without people like these many people would not be able to remain independent in their own homes or live life to the full in a residential environment. The sector’s endorsement of the awards will further to help to raise the profile of social care throughout the regions and we are looking forward to working with them for what promises to be another year of wonderful, motivational events.”
