Friday 3rd November saw over 300 of the very best in social care attended a glittering awards ceremony at The Mercure Hotel, Manchester Picadilly for the finals of the Great North West Care Awards, where the category winners were announced.

The Great North West Care Awards are part of the Great British Care Awards, a series of 9 regional awards celebrating excellence across the care sector. The purpose of the awards is to promote best practice within both home care and care homes sectors, and pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work.

Sector support includes Care England, The Department of Health, The National Care Forum, The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG), as well as local authorities and commercial organisations.

There are a total of twenty one award categories available for nomination, which represent all areas of the care sector, whether it be older people or specialist services and from frontline staff such as care workers and care managers to people who have made an impact in other ways such as training, and specialist care in areas such as dementia and innovation.

Winners of the Great North West Care Awards will go through to the final at Birmingham’s ICC in Spring 2018.

The Care Home Worker Award

Angela displayed raw passion in her commitment to the people she worked with. She is always willing to go the extra mile to ensure the best quality of care. Angela is humble and understated but with real fire in her belly. A really worthy winner!

The Home Care Worker Award
VESELKA PETROVA, COMPLETE CARE
Veselka Petrova has cared for one community based customer within homecare for over 13 years. She understands the need for care to be a 360-degree approach and is an absolute ambassador for her customer, colleagues and company. A true shining star in the industry.

The Care Newcomer Award
FOUAD SAAD, ATHENA HEALTH CARE GROUP
Fouad started in care because he wanted to do something that makes him want to get up in the morning and make a difference. He is passionate about his job and wants to make this his career.

The Care Home Registered Manager Award
ELSIE MACLENNAN, HOLMES CARE GROUP
Elsie was able to demonstrate high-quality, person-centred care and support to residents and their families, placing them and her workforce at the heart of everything that she says and does.
Elsie inspires her staff to provide the highest quality care to achieve positive outcomes for residents and their families, achieving improved quality of life for residents. Elsie clearly makes a difference to her staff, residents and families.

The Home Care Registered Manager Award
RACHEL COLE, IN SAFE HANDS
Rachel demonstrated a real passion for working in the care sector but more importantly, an emphasis on good governance developing the managers of the future and a commitment to finding new and innovative initiatives to engage with the community.

The Care Home Cook/Chef Award
CHLOE THURLEY, BELONG MACCLESFIELD
The passion that Chloe puts into her work is recognised each and every day by the residents that she cooks for. Chloe started working in care from leaving school and has quickly progressed into a senior role over the last 10 years, making a difference every day. Well done Chloe.

The Home Care Co-ordinator Award
LOUISE MARSH, KAREPLUS CHESHIRE

Louise is passionate about ensuring that person centred care is delivered by her staff team.  Louise goes the extra mile in ensuring service users needs are matched with the right care staff.  She is incredibly supportive of her care team and this means that the benefits will undoubtedly promote positive outcomes for the service users.

The Stockport council enhanced support team demonstrate a real passion for their team work in providing their innovative integrated end-of-life care service to people in their own homes.

The Care Home Activities Co-ordinator Award
ELIZABETH COPPIN, IMAP CENTRE
Elizabeth provides highly personalised and innovative approaches toward the provision of activities.
Learning and experience is at the heart of activities which benefit each service user. She puts the individual needs and aspirations at the heart of all she does.

The Ancillary Worker Award
JASON KIRWAN, ENABLING FUTURES
Jason demonstrates the skill and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously always ensuring that the residents wishes are maintained. A very worthy winner

The Care Trainer Award
FIONA CASSELLS, ATHENA HEALTH CARE GROUP
Fiona displayed an astonishing range of knowledge and experience. She is a high qualified teacher and trainer. Athena are lucky to have such an enthusiastic person responsible for training their staff and clearly capable of moving the organisation forward.

The Care Innovator Award

Lesley displayed a clear energy and passion coupled with commercial acumen to develop the North West Community Hub which is leading the way in bringing care home activities and integration across the region with future plans to develop a ground-breaking school’s booklet.

Will has lead his team to great success over the past year through support and innovative care. Will is always looking at the individual’s needs, be it the service user or carer.

The Putting People First/Personalisation Award

The team from Milbrook House really do put people first. Their commitment to improving the lives of young people and their great organisation ethos shone through.

The Good Nurse Award
TRACY NORBURY, HOLLINS PARK (CARE UK)
Tracy oozes passion, commitment and enthusiasm. She ensures she and her team help people develop through their journey all the way to the end of life, making it more comfortable. She brings normality to her 8-resident group recently bringing Blackpool to the home.

The Palliative Care/End of Life Award
BIRCH GREEN CARE HOME
The team at Birch Green showed exceptional end of life skills that really make a difference at one of the most important times of a person’s life and that of their loved ones. A much-deserved winner.

Unpaid Carer Award
JOE SHERVILLE, ATHENA HEALTHCARE GROUP

Joe is amazing gentleman. Joe is a volunteer for Athena Healthcare Group and a dementia friends Champion who has shown dedication for dementia awareness in all communities.

He volunteers helping the Activity coordinators within Athena lodges and performs dementia awareness sessions in the Care lodges for staff and families and friends

Joe is at a retirement age but is energy and dedication for elderly people is overwhelming.

His reputation is growing in local communities not only for all the volunteering work he is doing for Athena but also for eateries, care providers and other organizations associated with people living with dementia.

Joe is a valuable member of the Athena team!

The Outstanding Contribution to Social Care Award
DONNA BRIGGS, SPRINGHILL CARE GROUP

Birch Green are lucky to have Donna as managing director she has been with Springhill group for 20 years and in that time Donna has been a fantastic leader.

Donna has led Springhill through major developments including the launch of the national caring heroes campaign, the Springhill specialist care centre and the Springhill ILM training programme.

Most recently Donna lead the team to achieve investors in people gold at the time the only care provider in the north west to achieve.

Donna is always on hand to provide support to the staff, residents and visitors always ensuring she has a presence in the services coming in. She makes sure she chats to everyone gets involved with the activities in the home and is always encouraging of the team of staff.

Donna lives and breathes the company’s values and we are extremely lucky to have her.
