Pat and Jeff Nelson from United Response are an extraordinarily inspirational couple who have paved the way for children with Down’s syndrome and other disabilities to have equal opportunities and life experiences. Their journey began in 1975 when they fostered twins with Down’s syndrome, facing societal barriers, including denial of nursery access and essential medications due to prejudice. These challenges sparked their lifelong commitment to advocating for children’s rights. Their exceptional work has earned them a nomination for an MBE, continuing to influence the sector. Gaynor has dedicated her extensive career to supporting children and young people. From her early days as a residential care worker to roles in probation and education, she has consistently worked to make a difference.
